  Message from a Mississippi Advisor

Dr. Linda Mitchell, Vice Chairwoman of the National Board of DirectorsEveryday provides the perfect opportunity to take a fresh look at our lives, our goals, and our choices. We all have 86,400 seconds in a day... but how do we choose to spend them? Are we giving back to others, to our communities, to our country? Are we making new friends and keeping the old? Are we investing in our health and physical well being so that we feel energized and able to do those things we want to do? Are we expanding our horizons and exploring new territory? I work personally with many young people who can answer yes to all these questions because they are actively involved in the Congressional Award Program. I see first hand the difference they make in their communities and in the lives of others.

Respectfully,

Dr. Linda Mitchell
Vice Chairwoman, National Board of Directors

  Mississippi State Ceremony

The 2009 Mississippi State Ceremony!!!
Each year, the Mississippi Congressional Delegation celebrates the accomplishments of its Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalists through the annual State Ceremony. The event brings together medalists from across the state for a ceremony in Jackson. This year we held this special ceremony in Mississippi State Capitol Building.

Over 100 Mississippi youth were recognized for their service. The Congressional Award challenges our nation’s young people to realize their full potential through goal setting in the areas of Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition. Since its inception, thousands of young people have invested more than 2,500,000 hours of Voluntary Public Service in their communities.

This year's special guests included Congressman Greg Harper (pictured above with this year's medalists), members of the Mississippi State Congress, and representatives from the Mississippi State University. The ceremony was held on February 22, 2009.

Mississippi will be holding its Washington DC Ceremony on April 22, 2009!!!

  Participant Spotlight

Gold Medalist Thomas Kazery with Vice Chair Linda Mitchell, Chairman Paxton Baker, and Congressman Travis ChildersIn earning his Congressional Award Gold Medal, Thomas Kazery of Mississippi explored a variety of ways to give back to his community. Thomas was able to use his talents to serve others in working towards his Voluntary Public Service. He volunteered at many places but found one of the most rewarding to be the nursing home where he played his violin for the residents. “It cheers them up and gives them something to smile about”.

Thomas served as a Jr. Assistant scoutmaster for his Boy Scout Troop. His goal as an adult leader was to teach younger scouts some of the fundamentals of scouting. He realized that the younger boys looked to him for guidance and considered him a role model. During his Personal Development, Thomas wanted to improve his sight reading skills on his violin. Physical Fitness allowed Thomas to strengthen his running abilities. For his Expedition, Thomas learned to become a smarter and more responsible camper by planning and executing a four night camping trip to rural Mississippi. “Proper planning is essential when preparing for any trip. You can’t take for granted that your mom will prepare you supper. You have to fix it yourself so you better have planned and brought what you’ll need.”
